Join us this evening at 7 pm EST for a special livestream event, featuring three UMHS alumni all in their first year of residency. Celebrating Match Week 2022, these three residents reflect on their lives one year post Match Week 2021, when they first learned of their residencies. They'll share their experiences as well as give advice to the newly matching students. The event will be streamed on the UMHS YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter channels, then archived and made available for immediate viewing.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) - Advise from a Medical school Counselor Scott Harrah, M.A., Director of Digital Content at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences recently interviewed Ruth Fitzgerald, M.A. the Director of Counseling Services at UMHS. Their discussing centered around several topics to help Medical students cope with the stress of Medical School. What advice do you have, especially for people that might suffer from something like the seasonal affective disorder? Ruth FitzGerald: Yeah. Okay. Well, the first very practical and simple thing would be to really invest in good lighting in your home and go out and buy lots of lamps and make sure that you have the lighting just working really well in your home so that when you go in there, you feel good, you have the lighting the way you want it, whether it's really, really bright and that helps your mood or whether it's relaxing. Scott Harrah: Sure. Ruth FitzGerald: But lighting is actually very important. I think, and this goes to the sense of community, I think in UMHS. As you said, I'm new here, but I'm already getting a sense that there is a close-knit community and faculty who've been here for years have said that to me, that it does very much feel like people look out for each other. Scott Harrah: Sure Ruth FitzGerald: I think that's really important. Just again, not to isolate ourselves, to look out for each other, to check in with people and really make an effort just to be considerate and kind to one another, because it really helps other people. It also helps us when we're caring for each other. Scott Harrah: Yeah. Ruth FitzGerald: I think that comes naturally to people in this medical world anyway. Ruth FitzGerald: Then, I mean, there's all of the other normal advice you would expect as well. Get a bit of exercise, get enough sleep, eat properly. I think spoil ourselves actually, be nice to ourselves, do things we like, give ourselves treats, have hot bubble baths, have a nice glass of wine, cook a good meal, but be kind to ourselves as well. Scott Harrah: Do a little self-care. Ruth FitzGerald: Yes, I think so.
